The Buddha’s Five Remembrances

Buddhism practice and discourse are an important part of my life.  I’m moved, intrigued, struggling with, curious about this one – “the five remembrances.”  To be contemplated (daily) to help free ourselves from destructive attachments and realize our true inheritance. I’m still chewing on them . . .

I am of the nature to grow old. There is no way to escape growing old.

I am of the nature to have ill health. There is no way to escape ill health.

I am of the nature to die. There is no way to escape death.

All that is dear to me and everyone I love are of the nature to change. There is no way to escape being separated from them.

My actions are my only true belongings. I cannot escape the consequences of my actions. My actions are the ground upon which I stand.

  1. The harsh realities of life! Yes, not very joyful, but I’m sure it would be to our benefit to understand and learn to accept these truths, especially in preparation for our inevitable move to the next sphere. Thanks for sharing, Alex. I’m going to copy these.
